West Nile Virus is a viral infection that may cause either mild or serious diseases in individuals of all ages. It is caused by bites from mosquitoes that were infected through the bird population. In some cases, the virus may spread through human blood, causing an infection that requires transfusions. Individuals generally develop symptoms within two weeks of being bitten by an infected mosquito. While most cases of West Nile Virus are reported in the summer and fall, the illness may be contracted at any point during the year. That's why it's important to be able to recognize and identify symptoms of West Nile Virus, in order to prevent potentially fatal complications like encphelitis, meningitis or muscular weakness -- and, in some cases, death.
- Experiencing flu-like symptoms is often the first sign of a viral infection in the body. Low-grade fevers are common in both adults and children who have been bitten by an infected mosquito. Taken alone, these and the following symptoms are not necessarily causes for alarm. But together, they point to more serious conditions.
- Suffering from headaches or general body aches is a very common symptomof the West Nile Virus. People who spend a lot of time outdoors or those who have weak immune systems are especially susceptible.
- Swollen lymph glands is another common symptom of the West Nile Virus, and indicates that the body is trying to defend itself against attack.
- Itching and scratching caused by a skin rash are often apparent. A rash may appear on the stomach, chest or back, and is often accompanied by headaches, a high fever and neck stiffness.
- Vomiting and nausea are also symptoms of the West Nile Virus that are often mistaken for flu symptoms. In more severe cases, the individual might also experience disorientation, tremors and muscle weakness.
